Gary J. Maylon, Metal Lath & Stucco Consulting
Co., Inc.
Mr. Maylon has been involved with the stucco industry for over thirty-eight
years and has been involved in technical services and support for more
than twenty-two years.
During his career he has worked for two of the largest manufacturers
of expanded metal lath and light gage steel framing in North America.
I am the author of “The Metal Lath Handbook.”
This book was published in 2002 and has met with much success and excellent
reviews from the lathing and plastering community.
Mr. Maylon has been president and CEO of Metal Lath and Stucco Consulting
Co., Inc. since his retirement in 2004.
Accomplishments and Associations:
- Past chairman of the Metal Lath Division of the Metal Lath/Steel
Framing Association and currently technically advising and writing technical
literature for the new formed Expanded Metal Lath Association.
- Past chairman of the Technical Executive Committee of Association
of Walls and Ceilings International (AWCI); the largest contractor association
for stucco contractors in the U.S. and Canada.

the educational arm of AWCI.
- A long time member of The Construction Specifications Institute.
- Chairman of the C 1063 task group and a voting member of committee
C-11 of The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) since
1988 (voting member and chairman of C1063 since 1990. I received an
appreciation plaque for my long years of service and dedication to ASTM
C11. The overall committee of C11 deals with all elements of the stucco
wall including gypsum plaster and board, portland cement stucco, metal
lath and all of its various components. This committee deals with products,
installation methods and testing. These specifications and standards
are listed in every model building code currently in use in the United
States.
- He has been a consulting member of committee 524 on stucco of The
American Concrete Association and one of the authors of the Committee
524 ACI Stucco Manual.
- He is a consulting member of the Florida Cement and Products Association.
This is an association of portland cement and stucco manufacturers.
- He currently holds seven industry related patents for vinyl stucco
products, a metal lath and stucco security lathing system and a security
related product. In my thirty-five plus years in the stucco industry
I have developed or improved many of the products used by the industry
every day.
- Among his achievements he has published more than a dozen technical
articles in various trade publications. In 1996 Construction Dimensions
Magazine (published by AWCI) published the article entitled “Expanded
Metal Lath Installation for the Application of Portland Cement Stucco,
The Eight Deadly Sins.” This was a two-part article, which was
well received by the stucco industry. The Association of Walls and Ceiling
Industries International subsequently republished these articles as
a single stand alone document for industry distribution. It is still
available for sale and wide distributed today, nearly thirteen years
later.
- He taught the metal lath installation and stucco installation training
class in the developmental stages of STO Corp’s development of
a one-coat stucco system and helped edit and write their specifications.
- He taught a lath and stucco education program to companies like Synergy,
a one coat stucco manufacturer, AMICO, and Dietrich Steel Framing, manufacturers
of metal lath. I also taught a course on stucco and lath inspection
to the Home Inspection Association in Atlanta three years ago. Also
to numerous responsible lath and stucco contractors wishing to have
trained crews that know the proper installation techniques to meet today’s
code requirements.
- He was invited by the licensing department in the counties encompassing
Kansas City to provide continuing education on metal lath and stucco
in a four hour presentation for three straight years. I have given innumerable
educational presentations to municipal and county building inspectors
across the county, including Orange County, FL., St. Johns and Jacksonville,
FL, Orlando, FL, New Castle County, DE, Kansas City and Johnson County,
KS, and others.
- His book is the first book published in nearly forty years that covers
in detail the code requirements and techniques of metal lath installation
to achieve a successful code driven stucco application. If the lath
fails the stucco has to fail.
- Forensic Inspections: technically, he has been involved in innumerable
forensic investigations of lath and stucco jobs across the United States
starting in the mid 1980’s. he has developed techniques for testing
via destructive removal of stucco, complete and extensive evaluation
and documentation, and testing techniques such as water uptake testing.
Finally, he has testified in trial, depositions, arbitrations and negotiated
settlements in numerous cases involving stucco related failures over the
last twenty-five years. Below is his work history resume’.
